An athlete arriving from another continent is competing against his own body clock as well as the field. The physiology is well understood and it constrains how championships are prepared for.
Performance follows a daily rhythm
Core temperature, muscle stiffness and neural readiness all vary through the day, and most athletes reach their best in the late afternoon or early evening.
That rhythm is internal, driven by a body clock synchronized to light exposure rather than to the local time on a stadium schedule.
Racing at a local hour that corresponds to the athlete's biological early morning therefore means competing below his own ceiling, regardless of fitness.
Adjustment takes days, not hours
The clock resets gradually once the athlete is exposed to light on the new schedule, and the rate is limited by physiology rather than by willpower.
Direction matters. Traveling east, which shortens the day, is generally harder to adapt to than traveling west, where the day is lengthened.
This is why travel plans for a championship are built backward from the scheduled final rather than around convenience or cost.
Rounds compound the problem
Sprint events are contested over heats, semifinals and a final across several days, often with sessions in both morning and evening.
An athlete still adjusting may run a morning heat at his biological night, and a poorly run heat can end the championship before adaptation is complete.
Coaches therefore prioritize being adapted for the first round rather than the final, which is the opposite of how a taper is normally planned.
Preparation shifts before departure
Teams commonly begin moving sleep and meal times days before flying, shortening the shift that remains on arrival.
Training sessions are moved to match the scheduled competition hour, so the athlete's body learns to produce its best effort at the required time.
Where the shift is extreme, squads may camp at an intermediate location, splitting the adjustment into two smaller steps rather than one large one.
The cost is unevenly distributed
Athletes from the host region arrive already adapted, which is a genuine advantage that no rule addresses and no result sheet records.
Wealthier programs offset it by arriving early with full support staff, which turns an unavoidable physiological problem into a funding one.
Athletes traveling alone and late absorb the difference, and it shows most clearly in the early rounds where championships are quietly decided.
