Ask a sprinter why their blocks are set the way they are and the answer, nine times out of ten, is that a coach set them at fifteen and it has felt right ever since.

That is a strange thing to leave untouched. The pedal positions determine the joint angles at which the athlete produces the largest impulse of the race, they determine how long the athlete stays in contact with a fixed surface, and they are the one variable in the entire sport that can be changed in ten seconds with no training effect required. And yet spacing is treated as personal furniture rather than as a setting to be tested.

The physics are not subtle. A bunched setting puts both feet close together and close to the line, which gets the athlete moving early but gives very little range to push through, so the initial velocity out is low. An elongated setting gives the rear leg a long, generous push at the cost of a slower clearance and a rear leg that contributes almost nothing. Somewhere between those, for each athlete, is a spacing that trades reaction against impulse in the right proportion, and where that point sits depends on limb length and on how much force the athlete can express at a deep knee angle.

Which means it should move as the athlete gets stronger. A sprinter who has added meaningful strength over two winters can probably use a longer setting than they could before, because they can now hold and drive through an angle that used to collapse. Almost nobody re-tests.

There is an obvious protocol and it costs one session. Three spacings, several starts at each, timed to ten metres, run in a randomised order so the athlete does not simply get better at the last one. Throw out the reaction time and compare. It is not sophisticated and it will beat a year of feel.

The objection is that block settings interact with technique so the athlete needs weeks to adapt to a change. Sometimes true. Often used as a reason to never test anything.

I would rather have an athlete slightly uncomfortable in a better geometry than perfectly comfortable in a position chosen by a schoolteacher in a different decade. Test it in October. You have all winter to grow into it.
