You decide how you concede on the break while you still have the ball

Rest defence is not a reaction to losing possession, it is a set of decisions made twenty seconds earlier by players who are attacking.

The goal gets replayed from the moment the ball is lost. Two defenders against three attackers, forty metres of grass, everyone shouting about the transition. But the cause of that picture is nowhere in the clip. It is in the previous half minute, when a full back went sixty yards forward and the holding midfielder drifted wide to receive, and nobody was left standing where the second ball would land.

Rest defence is the least glamorous idea in modern coaching and one of the clearest dividing lines between well-run teams and merely exciting ones. While you attack, someone has to be positioned for a loss that has not happened yet. Not chasing back afterwards, which is too late by definition, but already there, already facing the right way, already close enough to the likely turnover point to make the first tackle before the counter has a shape.

The arithmetic is uncomfortable. Every player you hold back is a player not in the box, and attacks with more bodies in dangerous areas score more often. So the choice is real, it is a genuine trade, and anyone who tells you it is free is selling something. My view is that most teams get the trade wrong in the same direction. They keep too few, because the cost of keeping too few is paid on a different day, in a different match, and looks like bad defending rather than bad planning.

You can see who has thought about it. Watch which player takes the corner and which two stand thirty yards out apparently doing nothing. Watch whether the far side full back holds his position while his opposite number overlaps. Those choices are made in the calm, and they determine the chaos.

There is a second element nobody credits, which is the tactical foul. If your rest defence is sound, the first man to the ball carrier does not have to win it cleanly. He has to stop the ball travelling forward for three seconds so the others can get home. It is cynical, it is coached everywhere, and it works.

I would judge a coach on his team's shape at the moment of loss more than on its shape in possession. Anyone can arrange eleven men when they have the ball.

The hard part is arranging them for the moment you stop having it.
