Test cricket is still played with a red ball while shorter formats have moved to white. The difference is not tradition alone; the ball behaves differently over a long innings.
The ball is designed to deteriorate
A cricket ball changes continuously from the moment it is new. The lacquer wears, the seam flattens and one side scuffs while the other is polished by the fielding side.
Test cricket is constructed around that arc. A new ball offers seam movement and bounce, a middle period rewards spin and reverse swing, and a fresh ball becomes available again after a set number of overs.
The red ball's construction and dye hold up through that cycle in daylight, which is why the format has not needed to replace it.
White balls solved a visibility problem, not a performance one
White balls were introduced for cricket played under floodlights, where a red ball becomes difficult to sight against dark backgrounds and dark clothing.
The dye and finish that make a white ball visible also make it behave differently. It tends to lose hardness and shine sooner, and it discolours in a way that shortens its useful life.
Limited-overs cricket absorbs that easily because innings are short and balls can be changed or used in pairs. A five-day match cannot.
Reverse swing depends on a long single-ball period
Reverse swing emerges only once a ball is substantially worn and the two sides differ markedly in roughness. Reaching that condition takes many overs of use.
The bowling side manages it deliberately, polishing one side and allowing the other to abrade, which is a skill that only exists because one ball stays in play long enough.
Formats that change the ball frequently remove this phase entirely, taking with it a whole category of bowling that Test cricket treats as central.
The pink ball is a compromise for day-night play
Day-night Tests need a ball visible under lights that still survives eighty overs. The pink ball is the attempt to hold both requirements at once.
It behaves differently from either predecessor. Players report that it retains hardness longer and moves more under lights, particularly in the twilight period as natural light fades.
That twilight window has become a tactical feature of day-night matches, with captains weighing whether to bat or bowl through it.
Conditions interact with the ball more than with the format
What a red ball does depends heavily on the pitch, the outfield and the atmosphere. An abrasive outfield roughens a ball quickly and brings reverse swing forward.
Humidity and cloud cover affect conventional swing, which is why the same ball can behave entirely differently in two matches on similar surfaces.
A touring side reads these interactions when selecting its attack, because choosing between seam and spin is largely a judgement about how the ball will age.
