Added time at the end of a half is noticeably longer than it once was. The change came from a shift in how the stoppage is calculated, not from more interruptions.
The clock never stops in football
Football runs a continuous clock, unlike sports that pause the timer for every stoppage. Time lost during play has to be recovered by adding it at the end of each half.
Historically that addition was estimated. The fourth official signalled a whole number of minutes that approximated the delays, and the estimate was consistently conservative.
Because the estimate was low, the amount of actual football in a match had been drifting downward for years without the reduction being visible on any scoreboard.
Specific events are now counted explicitly
Officials were instructed to account for identifiable stoppages rather than judging the half as a whole. Goal celebrations, substitutions, penalties, disciplinary incidents and treatment for injuries are each measured.
A goal celebration alone can consume a considerable stretch of time when a team is celebrating in front of its own supporters, and several goals compound that.
Adding these together produces figures well above the traditional signal, which is why lengthy stoppage periods that once looked exceptional are now routine.
Video review made the deficit impossible to ignore
Reviews introduced a new category of stoppage that is both frequent and long. A check that overturns a decision can hold the match up for a substantial period.
Unlike an injury, a review is procedurally generated by the sport itself, so failing to add it back is straightforwardly a loss of playing time caused by administration.
Once that time was being tracked precisely for review purposes, treating other stoppages more loosely became difficult to defend.
Longer halves change how teams manage games
Time-wasting becomes less effective when the time is added back. A team protecting a lead gains far less from slow restarts than it once did.
Conversely, a team chasing a goal receives more opportunity, and late equalisers have become a more prominent feature of matches as a direct result.
Coaches adjust substitutions accordingly, holding changes back for a period that is now materially longer than the ninety minutes the schedule advertises.
The physical cost is real and unevenly distributed
Additional playing time across a full season accumulates into a meaningful increase in minutes for players who are rarely substituted, particularly goalkeepers and central defenders.
Sports science departments treat this as a load question rather than a rules question, because the extra minutes arrive at the end of matches when fatigue is already highest.
That is why some argue for a stopped clock instead. It would deliver the same recovered time without pushing the extra load into the most demanding phase of the match.
