Even pacing is faster than variable pacing
For a fixed level of effort, running at a constant speed produces a better time than alternating between faster and slower segments.
Surges are expensive physiologically, and the cost of accelerating repeatedly is not recovered during the slower phases that follow.
A pacemaker holding a steady speed therefore removes the largest source of time loss in a race where athletes would otherwise respond to each other's moves.
Leading costs more than following
Air resistance rises steeply with speed, and at distance-running pace it accounts for a meaningful share of the total energy an athlete expends.
A runner directly behind another encounters disturbed air and expends measurably less energy at the same speed, which is why packs form naturally.
Nobody wants to lead, which is precisely why unpaced races become slow and tactical, with the field bunching until a sprint finish decides it. Every athlete waits for someone else to absorb the cost.
The pacemaker resolves a coordination problem
Every athlete would prefer a fast race in which someone else leads. Without an arrangement, that preference produces a slow race in which nobody does.
Employing a runner to lead solves it directly. The pacemaker is paid to absorb the cost that no competitor will voluntarily accept.
Meeting organisers fund this because records and fast times attract audiences and sponsors in a way that tactical racing does not. A slow race with a thrilling finish sells poorly against a clock.
Championships deliberately exclude them
Major championships prohibit pacemaking, since the competition is meant to determine the best racer rather than to produce the fastest time.
The result is that championship finals are usually slow through the early stages and extremely fast over the closing lap, rewarding a different set of abilities.
Athletes whose strength is sustained speed rather than a finishing kick therefore attempt to make championship races honest by leading themselves, which rarely succeeds.
Records set behind pacing are treated differently in some events
Road racing has separated record categories according to whether an athlete was paced, and in some cases according to whether the pacing runner started the race.
The distinction acknowledges that a paced performance and an unpaced one are not the same achievement, even at identical times.
Pacing technology has extended this debate further, since lights and vehicles can provide the same rhythmic guidance without a human runner being present at all.
