Three-point attempts have risen sharply across professional basketball. The shift follows from a simple comparison of expected points that took decades to be acted on.
Expected value beats shooting percentage
A shot's worth is its scoring probability multiplied by its point value. A three-point attempt made at a lower rate can still return more points than a longer two-point shot made more often.
The mid-range jump shot sits in the worst position under that arithmetic. It is contested, it is not close enough to be efficient, and it carries no bonus for distance.
Once teams began evaluating shots by points per attempt rather than by percentage, the mid-range shot lost its justification almost immediately.
Spacing amplifies the effect
Players who must be guarded beyond the arc pull defenders away from the basket, which opens driving lanes for teammates and reduces help defence at the rim.
That means three-point shooting improves the value of shots it does not take. A team's layups become easier because the defence cannot collapse inside.
The two most efficient shot types therefore reinforce each other, and offences are built to generate only those two.
Defences adapted rather than solved it
Defences responded by extending pressure further from the basket and switching assignments more freely, which requires defenders capable of guarding multiple positions.
Extending coverage creates gaps behind it. A defence stretched to the arc has less resistance at the rim, which is why interior scoring efficiency did not collapse as attempts moved outward.
The counter is therefore incomplete by construction, and defensive schemes now choose which efficient shot to concede rather than preventing both.
Roster construction changed shape
The value of a player who cannot shoot from distance fell, because defenders can ignore him and use the spare defender to crowd the paint.
Traditional centres adapted by adding perimeter shooting or by becoming specialists in screening and rim protection, roles that survive without a jump shot.
Player development responded further down, with young big men now taught to shoot from range as a matter of course rather than as a novelty.
Variance rose with the volume
Three-point shooting fluctuates more than interior scoring, so a team built on volume from distance experiences wider swings between games.
Over a long season those swings average out, but a short playoff series does not provide enough games for that averaging to be reliable.
This is the strongest argument against pure volume shooting: a strategy that is optimal across eighty-two games can lose a series in seven.
