Every launch cycle brings a new cross-section. Tapered beams, grooved throats, a name with the word air in it, and a diagram showing streamlines behaving themselves. The physics quoted is real. The size of the effect is where the marketing lives.

Think about what a racquet head is doing on a serve. It travels perhaps eighty to a hundred miles an hour at contact, it is roughly the frontal area of a paperback book, and it is in the fast part of the swing for maybe a tenth of a second. Drag over that window is small compared with the inertia of the head, and it is very small compared with the variation introduced by the arm attached to it. A player fatigued in the third set loses more head speed in one stroke than a beam redesign will return over a career.

Where the shape does matter is torsional. A frame that resists twisting on an off-centre hit keeps more of the ball's energy and, more usefully, keeps the face angle closer to what the player intended. That is a stiffness and mass distribution question. It gets marketed as aerodynamics because a picture of airflow looks more like engineering than a chart of swingweight does.

Swingweight is the number I would actually make players learn. Two frames with the same printed weight can feel completely different because the mass sits at different points along the length, and the one that feels fast is not the one with the clever throat, it is the one balanced closer to the hand. Any competent stringer can measure it. Almost no recreational buyer asks.

There is a decent counter argument for the very top of the game, and I will grant it. At professional head speeds, on a serve, in a match that goes five sets, a genuinely small per-stroke saving accumulates into something a conditioning team would care about. Fine. That is an argument for the fifty players in the world who can produce those speeds, not for the club player being sold a fourth frame in three years.

My advice is boring and it has not changed. Get the grip size right, get the weight and balance right, then stop. If a frame is going to change your tennis, it will do it through the strings and the swingweight, and both of those cost less than the new model with the sculpted beam and the wind tunnel advert.
