Turnover is an output of how hard the athlete hits the ground, and cueing it directly usually shortens the sprint rather than quickening it.

Tell a sprinter to move their legs faster and watch what happens to the last twenty metres. The steps come quicker. They also get smaller, the hips settle, the contact times barely change, and the athlete crosses the line having run a lot of steps at their previous speed.

Frequency and length are not independent dials. Speed is their product, and both are governed by the same underlying thing, which is how much force the athlete puts into the track and in what direction during a contact they do not consciously control. A big push produces a long flight. A long flight takes time. That is why elite sprinters do not have absurd turnover; they have ordinary turnover and enormous steps, and the athletes with genuinely high frequency are often the smaller ones compensating.

So when a coach cues turnover directly, the athlete complies with the only lever available to conscious control, which is cutting the push short. The step rate goes up because the flight got shorter. Nothing was gained.

I will accept two exceptions. Acceleration out of blocks does benefit from a deliberate emphasis on getting the foot down, because early steps are genuinely limited by how quickly the leg can recover and the athlete is not yet at a speed where flight time dominates. And distance runners overstriding at low cadence are a different case entirely, because their limiter is braking, not propulsion, and nudging cadence up is a blunt but effective way to stop them landing so far in front of themselves.

Between those, in the flat-out sprint, cueing frequency is a way of making a technical problem worse while feeling busy.

What I would coach instead is the recovery mechanics that make frequency available without shortening the push. Heel to hip. Knee coming through early. The swing leg getting into position while the support leg is still working. Athletes who fold quickly get frequency for free, and they get it without sacrificing a single millisecond of ground contact.

There is a diagnostic here too. If an athlete's step rate rises across a race, they are usually decelerating, not accelerating.

The clock is the only thing that cares about the product. Everything else is bookkeeping, and the athlete trying to run fast should not be doing arithmetic at four steps a second.
