Hurdle races are the only sprints where the track tells you how long your steps are allowed to be. That single constraint changes the event more than most people watching it realise.

The distances between barriers are fixed. So is the run-up. The athlete therefore has to cover a set space in a whole number of strides, and if his natural stride at race speed does not fit that number, he has two bad options: stretch and reach, which slows him at every touchdown, or chop and shuffle, which wastes the speed he built.

Which means being fast is not sufficient and can even be a nuisance. A powerful sprinter who converts to hurdles often finds himself arriving at each barrier slightly too close, crowded, forced to take off from a spot that makes the lead leg come up late. He clears it anyway. He also lands with the hips behind the foot, kills his momentum, and spends the next three steps rebuilding.

That is why the good ones look like they are doing something rhythmic rather than something athletic. The event rewards a consistent, repeatable pattern executed at high speed, and consistency is a different training quality from raw acceleration. It is also why hurdle races unravel so completely when they go wrong. Hit one barrier, land short, and the pattern for every remaining hurdle is wrong too. There is no recovering the rhythm mid-race, only surviving it.

I would argue that this makes the hurdles the most technical event on the flat track, and it is treated as an afterthought by many programmes, coached as sprinting plus an obstacle. It is not. The take-off distance, the trail leg mechanics, the arm that has to counterbalance the lead leg without opening the shoulders, these are skills with long learning curves, and they degrade under fatigue faster than sprinting mechanics do.

The counter is that you still cannot medal without speed, and that is true. Rhythm alone gets you a very tidy sixth place.

But the sport keeps assuming the fastest man on the flat should convert, and keeps being surprised. The barrier does not care how quick you are between them. It cares whether you arrive at the right place, and it asks that question ten times.
