When rain shortens a limited-overs match, the target is recalculated rather than simply reduced. The method treats overs and wickets as two separate resources being spent.
Overs and wickets are both resources
A batting side begins with a fixed number of overs and a fixed number of wickets. Losing either reduces what remains available, and the two interact rather than working independently.
A team with all its wickets intact can score more freely in the overs left than a team that has lost most of them, even with identical overs remaining.
Any fair adjustment therefore has to know both numbers. A rule that reduced the target purely in proportion to overs lost would ignore half the picture.
The resource table drives the calculation
The method uses a table giving the percentage of resources still available for every combination of overs remaining and wickets lost. Interruptions are converted into resource losses.
The revised target follows from comparing the resources each side actually had. If the chasing team has fewer, the target falls; if it has more, the target rises.
That second case surprises people, but it follows directly. A team that knows it has only a short chase can attack from the first ball, which is an advantage that must be priced in.
Timing of the interruption matters more than length
Rain arriving before a chase begins produces a straightforward reduction, because both sides then play a match of known length and can plan accordingly.
Rain arriving mid-innings is harder, since the batting side has already made decisions based on a longer game. Wickets spent building a platform cannot be recovered.
This is why a side chasing may deliberately keep wickets in hand under threatening skies, accepting a slower rate in exchange for a stronger position if the calculation is triggered.
The par score is the number to watch
During an interrupted chase, the relevant figure is the par score for the current over and wicket position. A team ahead of par at the moment play is abandoned wins.
That converts the closing overs into a race against a moving line rather than a fixed total, and it changes field settings and shot selection immediately.
Captains and dressing rooms follow par continuously in poor weather, because a single boundary can move a side from behind to ahead of a line that may be applied without warning.
Minimum overs decide whether a result exists
A minimum number of overs must be bowled to the chasing side for a result to stand. Below that threshold the match is abandoned regardless of the position.
That threshold creates its own tactics. A fielding side may hurry through overs to reach it when ahead, or slow down when the position favours abandonment.
Over-rate regulations and umpire intervention exist to limit the manipulation, but the incentive is structural and does not disappear.
