A sprint relay is not simply four sprints joined together. Most of the time gained or lost occurs in the exchanges, where two athletes must synchronise precisely.
The baton travels faster than any runner
The baton's speed determines the team's time, and an ideal exchange transfers it between two athletes who are both moving quickly.
Because the outgoing runner has already accelerated when he receives it, the baton never decelerates to the speed of a standing start after the first leg.
A poor exchange, where the outgoing runner slows to collect it, wastes far more time than any realistic difference in individual sprinting ability.
The zone is short and the penalty is absolute
The exchange must be completed within a marked zone. A baton passed outside it disqualifies the team regardless of the result.
That makes the exchange a problem of risk management. Delaying the pass maximises speed but risks running out of zone, while an early pass is safe and slower.
Teams practise a check mark on the track, a point at which the outgoing runner begins to move, so the timing does not depend on judgement during the race.
The outgoing runner cannot look back
In the fastest exchanges the outgoing runner accelerates without watching, relying entirely on the mark and a verbal call to time the reach.
Turning to look costs speed and disturbs running mechanics, so the blind exchange is faster but requires complete trust between the pair.
This is why relay squads value continuity of personnel. The pairing, not the individual, is what has been trained.
Leg order distributes different skills
The first leg runs from blocks around a bend, which favours a strong starter comfortable on the curve. The second and fourth legs cover longer running distances.
The third leg runs the second bend and typically goes to another curve specialist, while the final leg often carries the fastest finisher.
Hand preference matters too, since alternating which hand carries the baton allows runners to stay on their side of the lane throughout.
Championship failures are usually exchanges, not speed
Teams with the fastest individual athletes are eliminated regularly through dropped batons and out-of-zone passes, which is a persistent feature of the event.
The cause is usually limited practice time, since athletes assemble shortly before a championship having spent the season in individual competition.
Squads that train the exchange as a unit through the year outperform faster collections of individuals, which makes the relay a test of preparation as much as speed.
