A Test pitch is prepared over days, and most of what decides how it plays is settled before the toss. The variables are few but their effects are large.
Moisture is the primary control
How much water is left in a pitch determines how it binds. A surface with moisture retained beneath the top holds together and offers pace and carry to seam bowlers.
A drier surface breaks up sooner. The top layer loosens under bowlers' footmarks and the ball begins to grip and turn, which is why spin becomes decisive later in a match.
Groundstaff regulate this with watering and covering schedules across the preceding week, and their decisions cannot be reversed once the match starts.
Grass cover changes the first two days
Leaving grass on a pitch binds the surface and keeps moisture in. It also presents a seam with something to grip, which is why green surfaces assist bowlers early.
Shaving the grass exposes the soil and accelerates deterioration. Batting is easier at the start, but the surface degrades faster and the later stages become more difficult.
The choice is therefore about when a match is hardest to bat in, and captains select their bowling attacks according to the answer.
Rolling redistributes hardness
Heavy rolling compacts the surface, producing consistent bounce and a faster outfield-like top. Its effect fades as the match progresses and the compacted layer breaks up.
Teams are entitled to request rolling between innings, and the choice is tactical. A side about to bat may want the surface bound together for a few more hours.
The same roller can help or harm depending on when it is used, because compacting a drying pitch can bring the surface to the point of cracking sooner.
Soil composition sets the ceiling
Pitches with a high clay content bind tightly and last longer, holding their shape into the later days. Lower clay content produces surfaces that crumble earlier.
Because soil is a property of the ground rather than a preparation decision, venues develop reputations that persist across decades regardless of who is preparing them.
Touring sides plan selection around those reputations, sometimes naming an attack for a venue rather than for the opposition.
Home advantage is largely a preparation advantage
A home side knows what its groundstaff can produce and selects a squad suited to it. That alignment between surface and personnel is most of what home advantage means in cricket.
Visiting teams counter by arriving early for practice matches on similar surfaces, though the preparation window is often too short to change technique meaningfully.
Governing bodies rate pitches after matches to discourage surfaces that make a fair contest impossible, which sets an outer boundary on how far preparation can be pushed.
